What is The Shotokan Tiger Nation?

The Shotokan Tiger Nation is an initiative to encourage children to get active and learn life skills through training in the art of Shotokan Karate.

We function as a part of Chelmsford Shotokan Karate Club and are affiliated with the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB).

Our classes are aimed at children aged 4-10 and are an introduction to the exciting martial art of Karate in a safe, controlled environment.

Our goal is to encourage children to keep active and healthy through Karate, and to teach more than just martial arts- but life skills.

We stress the importance of true Karate spirit to our students and, to this end, emphasis is always placed on the development of the disciplines of Character, Sincerity, Effort, Etiquette, and Self Control. It is because of this training that our students attain such high standards, both in and out of the Dojo.

What is Shotokan Karate?

Shotokan Karate (show-tow-can) is the most widely practiced style of Karate. It was developed from a variety of martial arts by Sensei Funakoshi. It is considered very traditional and influential.

There are three main areas of Shotokan Karate that we teach in our lessons:

Kihon - (key-hon) basic techniques, i.e. blocks, punches, and kicks.

Kata - (cat-ah) a set of moves/routine made up of combinations of Kihon.

Kumite - (koo-me-tay) fighting/sparring.

With each new belt that is earned through completing a Grading, a student will learn more advanced versions of these three areas. As a beginner, these areas will be taught thoroughly and the 'Kumite', or fighting, will be taught slowly in a controlled manner.

For our Tigers, we tend to do a combination of all three in our lessons, with games focused around what they have learnt so they can practice whilst having fun.

However, Chelmsford Karate Club is much larger and has students of all ages and abilities, from Adult-Only classes to Family Classes.

If you would like to learn more about the Club as a whole, rather than a focus on only our Tigers, please feel free to visit the main website:
